Bio:
I am Shirley LaVonne Grimes "Maiden Name" Young, McMullen, Sloan, which the last one still stands after 49 years.
I joined the Air Force in October 1963-1966.
I did my basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. I went in so I could travel. I was a KP pusher, and I had one of the guys mopping the ceiling over the coffee pot, and he said, "Wait until I tell my Mom you had me mopping the ceiling". They put me in permanent Party as a cook. I made salads, then they put me in the office for the rest of the time. I got married and got out, but now that can't happen, you have to serve your time.
It was a job as if I were off base, except you had to salute the Brass when you saw them. In Basic, we had four to a room, and at the Permanent party, we had two to a room. When I was up for promotion, I always got it. I got out as Airman 3rd Class.
In March of 1976 I married my husband Buck. Buck and I started the Buckshot Jamboree in Houston Texas in 2007. Buckshot Jamboree is still gathering the community together as of 2025. 18 years later.
