SGT Elvis W. Osborne Jr. and SP4 Jeffrey A. Maurer were Rangers serving with Team 76, H Company, 75th Infantry, 1st Cavalry Division. On June 9, 1972, they were on a patrol led by Osborne conducting reconnaissance near Tan Uyen, approximately eight miles southwest of Phuo Vinh City in Binh Duong Province, RVN. After helicopter gunships raked a North Vietnam Army bunker complex there, the team went in to assess the damage. Either a rocket or a command-detonated bomb rigged as a mechanical ambush device claimed their lives. Osborne and Maurer were among the last U.S. Army infantrymen killed by enemy action in the war.
His tour was up in a bit over a month.
