James Shaw Patterson was born in Lubbock Texas to Jay Lonnie Patterson, Sr. and Myrtle Couch. He married Florence Mary Al Dora Mace on 31 October 1952 at Galveston Island, Texas. They had one daughter. He enlisted on 28 February 1947 and was discharged on 2 March 1953.
