Joe A Payne served with the 5 th Tennessee Regiment (McKenzie’s) company B, as a private. They were organized in December 1862. In the pension applied for by his wife, she stated that he started in infantry but later joined a cavalry unit. He was the son of Martin Payne and Minerva Haney (Honey). He married Hannah Sims in Denton, Texas on 16 July 1893. They had seven children. She was his second wife.
