Bio:

Ben July was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in Mexico. He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’11”. He was 19 when he first enlisted.

He completed 21 enlistments, serving from September 21, 1882 to January 19, 1907. He served under Lt. Jones, Lt. Guard, Lt. Hewitt, Lt. Hall, Lt. Dickman, Lt. Turner, Lt. Evans, Lt. Shanks, Lt. Lowe, Lt. Longhorn, Lt. Vestal, Lt. Fonda, Lt. Blasland, and Lt. Bell. He was stationed at Ft. Clark, Cp Palvo, Cp Presidio, Ft. Ringold, and Cp Neville.

In June 1893, he became a sergeant. In June 1894, he became a 1st sergeant.

Ben July was discharged on May 28, 1907. He is listed as receiving disability retirement at Washington DC as a 1st Sergeant. He died on September 14, 1912 and was buried at the Seminole Indian Scouts Cemetery in Brackettville, TX.
