Bio:

Sampson July was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in Tampa Bay, Florida. He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’10”. He was 49 when he first enlisted.

He completed 10 enlistments, serving from March 4, 1875 to May 12, 1884. He served under Lt. Markley, Lt. Bullis, Lt. Jones, and Lt. French. He was stationed at Cp. Supply, Ft. Duncan, Cp. Painted, Cp. Howard, Ft. Clark, and Cp. Myers.

Note: It is believed that Sampson July was born in the Indian village called Thlonto-sasa. It was the Micanopy reserve. It is believed that Sampson July was formerly enslaved by Micanopy, who was the chief of the Seminole Nation.

Sampson’s wife’s name was Mary. They had seven children — Carolina, Cato, Jim, John, Fate, Ben, and Bill. Carolina, John, Ben, and Bill served as Scouts as well.

Sampson July died on May 16, 1918. He was buried at the Seminole Indian Scouts Cemetery.
