Bio:

Aaron Payne was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in Mexico. He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’5”. He first enlisted when he was 17.

He completed 9 enlistments, serving from October 7, 1871 to January 27, 1879. He served under Major Bliss, Captain Breyer, Lt. Land, Lt. Cranston, Lt. Parker, and Lt. Bullis. He was stationed at Fort Duncan, Fort Clark, and Camp Pecos.

He was probably a descendant of enslaved people who had belonged to Seminole Head-Chief King Payne, from whom Seminole Head-Chief Micanopy inherited most of the people he had enslaved.

Aaron Payne died on January 27, 1879. The cause was an accidental gun shot. This happened near Fort Clark. He was buried at the Seminole Indian Scouts Cemetery.
