Bio:
George Simmons was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in Mississippi. He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’5”. He was 37 when he first enlisted (according to the 1880 census).
He completed eight enlistments, serving from August 12, 1872 to August 31, 1884. He served under Lt. Bullis, Lt. Jones, Lt. French, Lt. Hall, Lt. Parker, and Lt. Land. He was stationed at Ft. Clark, Cp. Myers, and Cp. Supply.
George Simmons’s enlistment was terminated for convenience of government. It was revoked due to the hardship on the Black Seminole Community.
In the 1880 census, Simmons was listed as being 45 years of age and born in Texas (He also listed as having been born in Mississippi). His wife Lucy was 25. They had 5 children — Nelly, Henry, Sally, Catherine, and Hepey. Simmons was probably an ex-soldier who married into the Black Seminole community
