Bio:

Jose Tafoya was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in New Mexico. He had black eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion. He was 5’10”. He was 41 when he first enlisted.

He completed one enlistment, serving from May 8, 1879 to May 7, 1880. He served Lt. Bullis and was stationed at Fort Clark.

Jose Tafoya was a Comanchero who was captured by the Scouts and forced by Col. Mackenzie to serve as a guide in the Staked Plains, after hanging him from a wagon-tongue.

Jose Tafoya helped Mackenzie find Cheyennes, Comanches, and Kiowa. Jose became persona non grata with his previous clientele which is why he served as a guide and enlisted in the Seminole Negro Indian Scouts. No record can be found of him after May 1880.
