Bio:

John Thomason was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in Mexico. He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’7”. He was 18 when he first enlisted.

He completed 18 enlistments, serving from August 16, 1870 to August 7, 1883. He served under Maj. Bliss, Cpt. Beyer, Lt. Bullis, Lt. Longborough, and Lt. Jones. He was stationed at Fort Duncan, Camp Palafox, Fort Clark, Camp Myers, and Fort McKavett.

Note: John Thomason deserted during field duty at Fort McKavett because he left when his enlistment expired (He was one of three scouts who did this). He was excused since he returned to Fort Clark and reported to duty. He was formerly discharged on February 25, 1876.

He was the son of a Cherokee Negro Indian who married a Seminole.

John Thomason died on September 7, 1883 of a gunshot wound in Fort Clark.
