Today, we are honoring Private Henry Vaughn.

Henry Vaughn was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory. He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’4”. His age at the time of enlistment is unknown.

He completed one enlistment, serving from April 24, 1875 to January 1, 1876. He served under Lt.
Markley and was stationed at Ft. Duncan.

Note: Henry Vaughn was probably formerly enslaved or the descendant of someone who had been enslaved by a Choctaw. Mr. Vaughn was reported to have still been alive and living in Del Rio in 1941.
