He died of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in Qazi Bandeh. At the age of 17, Cory decided he wanted to do something to help his country, his family and his friends so he joined the Army in January 2007 as an infantryman. His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, NATO-ISAF medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Arm Service Ribbon and Combat Infantry Badge. Cory spent a lot of quality time with his grandfather. They loved to shoot guns together and take walks. He told his grandfather that he had found purpose to his life in the military and felt he was helping protect his family. Cory was scheduled to come home next month for his 19th birthday and for Thanksgiving.
