Staff Sgt. Jeremie S. Border, 28, of Mesquite, Texas, assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Torii Station, Japan; died Sept. 1, in Batur Village, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with small arms fire.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lance A. Border; grandmother, Marion Taylor; grandfathers, Rex Border and Robert Tarpley. Jeremie is survived by his mother; father, sisters; brother, aunt; uncles; cousins, godsons and a host of family and friends.
BORDER, STAFF SERGEANT JEREMIE SHANE born in Farmington, New Mexico on March 3, 1984. His mother moved him to Texas as soon as she could. In high school, Jeremie was a member of the Mesquite High School football team, the Skeeters. He proudly played a part in the 2001 perfect season. With his family's support, Jeremie became an Eagle Scout and graduated from high school in 2002. Upon graduation, Jeremie attended college at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas earning his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Communications in 2006. He enlisted in the Army on June 8, 2006 as an infantryman and completed basic training and advanced individual training. Jeremie then completed the basic airborne course at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to 1-17th Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. In 2008, upon completion of the Special Forces (SF) Assessment and Selection Course, Jeremie was selected to become a SF weapons sergeant. As part of his training he learned the Indonesian language at the US Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School. He was originally assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Okinawa, Japan in 2009 but requested a transfer to Alpha Company to allow him to deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan. Some of Jeremie's awards include Special Forces Tab, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Posthumously, he was awarded Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Preceded in death by biological father, Lance A. Border; paternal grandfather, Rex Border; grandfather, Robert Tarpley; grandmother, Marion Taylor. Jeremie is survived by mother, Mary Border; dad, Robert Harris; sister, DeLaynie Peek and husband Jason; sister, Ashley Harris; sister, Amanda Pereira and husband Berto; sister, Katie Border; brother, Jeff Border; paternal grandmother, Mary Lou England; step-grandmother, Gloria Tarpley; godsons, Robbie and Kayden Pereira; aunt, Judie Goodwin and husband Mike; uncle, John Tarpley and wife Kathy; uncle, Wayne Tarpley; cousins, Bryan Goodwin and wife Sandy, Jeff Tarpley and wife Stephanie, Angie Stewart and husband Brent, Sherry Tarpley; and a host of family and friends, too many to mention.
