Bio:
Pompey Factor was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in Arkansas (Indian Territory). He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’8”. He enlisted in Texas at the age of 21.
He completed 12 enlistments, serving from August 16, 1870 to November 14, 1880. He was stationed at Fort Duncan, Cp. Comanche, Cp. Palafox, Fort Clark, Cp. Painted, Cp. Black Water Hole. He served under Major Bliss, Cpt. Beyer, Lt. Bullis, and Lt. Valise.
Private Pompey Factor was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions on April 25, 1875. He and two other Scouts (John Ward and Issac Payne) saved the life of Lt. Bullis.
On December 31, 1877, Adam Payne (a Medal of Honor recipient) was gunned down by Clarion Windus, who was a sheriff and also a Medal of Honor recipient, at a dance. Pompey, along with several others, took off for Mexico and was declared a deserter. Following Special Order 113, on May 31, 1878, the Department of Texas determined that Pompey Factor would be restored to duty without a trial on the condition that he made good on the time lost by the government during his desertion by forfeiting all pay and allowances for the exact amount of time of his absence.
Factor died at age 78 or 79 and was buried at the Seminole Indian Scouts Cemetery in Brackettville, Texas. #blackseminoles #seminolenegroindianscouts
