Bio:
John Ward was a Seminole Negro Indian Scout who was born in in either Mexico or Arkansas. He had black eyes, black hair, and a black complexion. He stood 5’8”. He was 25 when he first enlisted.
Enlisted in Fort Duncan, Texas. John Ward completed 31 enlistments, serving from August 16, 1870 to October 4, 1894. He served under Maj. Bliss, Lt. Land, Lt. Cranston, Lt. Kirkman, Lt. Bullis, Lt. Longborough, Lt. Campbell, Lt. French, Lt. Hewitt, Lt. Hall, Lt. Dickman, Lt. Turner, Lt. Lowe, Lt, Langhorn, Lt. Vestal, and Lt. Hardin. He was stationed at Ft. Duncan, Ft. Clark, Cp. Myers, Cp. Palvo, Cp. Presidio, Ft. Ringold, Cp. Chinate, Cp. Pena, Cp. San Pedro, and Cp. Neville.
John Ward was one of the original 18 scouts selected to serve by Major Bliss. In April 1875, Pompey Factor, Isaac Payne, and John Ward were awarded awarded the Medal of Honor for saving Lt. Bullis.
The 1880 census lists John Ward’s wife’s name of Juda and his children as Laura, Dolly, Abby, Nancy, Caroline, and Toney.
John Ward passed away on May 24, 1911 and was buried at the Seminole Indian Scouts Cemetery.
Note: John Ward was related to Bill and Scott Warrior. They were brothers. John’s surname was changed by an enlisting officer.
